On the morning of 17 October 2026 we searched this exact phrase from Hyderabad and wrote down what the first page said. AmbitionBox: Rs 16.1 lakh. Glassdoor: Rs 12 lakh base. Levels.fyi: $31,736. Futurense: Rs 6 to 9 lakh for freshers. Coursera: Rs 10,22,000, quoting a PayScale figure from June 2025. Recrew: Rs 13 to 15 lakh. 6figr: Rs 33.1 lakh. A YouTube video: Rs 4 to 8 lakh.
Eight results, eight numbers, one question. The lowest and highest differ by more than three and a half times, and a reader comparing them has no way to tell which one describes them, because nobody on that page says what they counted.
So this page does the boring work instead. Every figure below is named, dated and attached to its sample size, and every claim about what employers will actually pay is checked against the 3,852 data scientist adverts live on naukri.com for Hyderabad and Secunderabad on 17 October 2026. All salary figures are market estimates, not guarantees, and they depend on your experience, your employer and how your interview goes.
How much does a data scientist earn in India?
A data scientist in India earns an average base salary of Rs 10,17,652 per year, according to PayScale India's 1,267 salary profiles, last updated 9 July 2026. Entry level, under one year, averages Rs 5,95,255. Indeed reports a higher Rs 12,09,022 from 428 salaries. Both are market estimates and not guarantees.
Those two figures are the best-evidenced ones available, and the gap between them is the first thing worth understanding. PayScale is reporting base pay from people who filled in a survey. Indeed is reporting figures scraped from employer listings and employee reports. One is what people say they take home, the other is closer to what companies write down. They will never match.
Why does every source give a different data scientist salary?
Because the six big sources measure different populations, different pay components and different years, and none of the ranking pages says so. PayScale measures base pay from 1,267 self-reports. AmbitionBox measures total CTC from 61,600. Glassdoor's India figure rests on 50 submissions. 6figr skews to high-paying tech employers. Levels.fyi reports in dollars.
Lay them side by side with their sample sizes and the mystery disappears.
| Source | The figure it quotes | Sample size | Last updated | What it actually measures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PayScale India | Rs 10,17,652 avg base | 1,267 profiles | 9 Jul 2026 | Base salary only, self-reported, bonus and profit share listed separately |
| Indeed India | Rs 12,09,022 avg | 428 salaries | 14 Aug 2026 | Blend of employer listings and employee reports; range Rs 6,99,974 to Rs 20,88,270 |
| Glassdoor India | Rs 12 L base + Rs 2 L additional | 50 salaries | Latest entry 15 Oct 2026 | Total pay including bonus, from a very small sample |
| AmbitionBox | Rs 15.3 L to Rs 16.9 L typical | 61,600 salaries | 17 Oct 2026 | Total CTC, and stated for 1 to 8 years of experience — not for freshers |
| 6figr | Rs 33.1 L avg | 5,439 profiles | Not stated | Skews heavily to product and high-paying tech employers; range runs to Rs 129.9 L |
| Levels.fyi | $31,736 median | 1,070 submissions | Not stated | Reported in US dollars; its contributor base is largely product companies |
| GeeksforGeeks | Rs 9,27,349 avg | Not stated | 23 Jul 2025 | Secondary aggregation, fifteen months old when read |
Three practical rules fall out of that table. Prefer the source with the largest sample for the question you are asking. Check whether the number is base pay or total CTC, because the difference is routinely two to four lakh. And check the date, because a page published in December 2025 quoting a June 2025 figure was already stale before anyone read it.
What is the starting salary for a data scientist in India?
Roughly Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh a year is the honest starting band. PayScale India puts entry level, under one year, at Rs 5,95,255 from 307 salary profiles. Indeed lists Junior Data Scientist at Rs 5,49,710. Google's own AI Overview gives Rs 4 to Rs 8 lakh. Three independent sources, one consistent answer.
Notice what is not in that band: the Rs 16 lakh figure sitting at the top of the search results. The three sources that specifically isolate people with under a year of experience all land between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 8 lakh, and AmbitionBox's own live feed on the day we read it showed a Digit Insurance data scientist self-reporting Rs 6.0 lakh at one year of experience. That is the market, and it is a perfectly good first salary for a graduate in India.
Is Rs 16 lakh really a fresher's starting salary?
No, and this is the single most repeated error on this keyword. Google's snippet for the top result reads "average starting salary is around Rs 16.1 Lakhs per year". AmbitionBox's own page says something different: its typical range of Rs 15.3 lakh to Rs 16.9 lakh is labelled for one to eight years of experience, not for a starting salary.
We read that page on 17 October 2026 to check. The heading above the figure says "TYPICAL SALARY RANGE", and directly beneath it, "with 1 - 8 years experience". It is a mid-career band drawn from 61,600 salary reports, and it is a credible number for someone four or five years in. It is not what a fresher is offered, and AmbitionBox never said it was.
The mislabel then travels. A snippet calls it a starting salary, blog posts quote the snippet, and a reader finishes their course expecting Rs 16 lakh and gets offered Rs 6 lakh. If you take one thing from this page, take the habit of opening the source and reading the small print under the number.
How to check any salary figure in thirty seconds
Open the page the number came from. Find three things: the sample size, the date it was last updated, and the experience range the figure is attached to. If any of the three is missing, the number is not usable for planning. If the page says "total CTC", subtract the joining bonus and stock before you compare it with a monthly take-home figure.
What do Hyderabad employers actually advertise?
Hyderabad and Secunderabad carried 3,852 data scientist listings on naukri.com on 17 October 2026, and 1,669 of them advertised Rs 10 to 15 lakh. Filter the same search to zero years of experience and the total collapses to 66 listings, of which only 8 reach that band and 8 are unpaid internships.
Salary surveys tell you what people report earning. Adverts tell you what employers are willing to write down in public, which is a different and in some ways more honest signal. Here is the same Hyderabad search at four experience settings.
| Experience filter | Listings | Rs 0–3 L | Rs 3–6 L | Rs 6–10 L | Rs 10–15 L | Share at Rs 10–15 L |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 years | 66 | 20 | 43 | 36 | 8 | 12% |
| 2 years | 564 | 63 | 327 | 394 | 204 | 36% |
| 5 years | 1,949 | 131 | 550 | 1,067 | 1,026 | 53% |
| All levels | 3,852 | 298 | 812 | 1,536 | 1,669 | 43% |
The curve is the useful part. The share of Hyderabad adverts offering Rs 10 to 15 lakh goes from 12 percent at zero years to 36 percent at two years to 53 percent at five. Nothing about your skill changes that fast. What changes is that employers price countable years, and the first two of them are the expensive ones to get through.
There is a second finding in the zero-year view that no salary page will tell you. We read the 66 listing titles. They were Data Analyst, Data Engineer, Data Science Intern (unpaid), Associate Data Scientist (unpaid internship), Senior Data Annotator, Data Verification Analyst, and one advert titled "Sr Data Scientist" that accepted 0 to 5 years. Naukri itself filed the largest role category as Business Intelligence and Analytics, 21 listings, ahead of Data Science and Machine Learning at 14. At zero years, Hyderabad is not really advertising data scientist jobs. It is advertising analyst and data engineering jobs, and asking you to grow into the title.
Which Hyderabad advert band are you likely to be read into?
Pick your countable experience, the kind of employer you are aiming at, and whether you have reviewed generative-AI project work. The estimator below returns the actual Hyderabad advert distribution for that experience filter and the matching AmbitionBox employer band, both read on 17 October 2026, with the caveats attached.
This reports published advert distributions and published employer salary bands for the inputs you chose. It is a reading aid for real market data, not a prediction, an offer or a guarantee of any salary.
What is the data scientist salary in Hyderabad?
AmbitionBox puts Hyderabad at Rs 15.7 lakh to Rs 17.3 lakh from 7,200 salary reports, and Glassdoor at Rs 14,50,000, which it calls 4 percent above the national average. Indeed's top-paying-cities list, led by Pune at Rs 13,66,162, leaves Hyderabad out entirely. The city is strong but not the premium market it is sold as.
Hyderabad's real advantage shows up in volume rather than in the headline rate. Naukri listed 3,852 data scientist adverts for Hyderabad and Secunderabad against 1,196 for Bengaluru, 707 for Chennai and 553 for Pune in the same search on 17 October 2026, and 2,928 of the Hyderabad ones were work-from-office roles. For someone living in Kukatpally or KPHB, that is a dense local market you can interview in without relocating, which matters more over three years than a two percent difference in the citywide average.
How much does a data scientist salary rise with experience in India?
PayScale India shows average pay moving from Rs 5,95,255 under one year to Rs 10,05,147 at one to four years, a 69 percent rise. AmbitionBox top-decile bands follow the same shape: Rs 11.3 to 12.5 lakh at one to three years, rising to Rs 20.5 to 22.6 lakh at six to nine years.
| Experience | PayScale India average | AmbitionBox top 10% earn | Sample behind the AmbitionBox band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1 year | Rs 5,95,255 | — | 307 PayScale profiles |
| 1 to 3 years | Rs 10,05,147 (1–4 yrs) | Rs 11.3 L – Rs 12.5 L | 24,000 salaries |
| 3 to 6 years | Not isolated on the page | Rs 15 L – Rs 16.6 L | 35,400 salaries |
| 6 to 9 years | Not isolated on the page | Rs 20.5 L – Rs 22.6 L | 2,800 salaries |
Two things to take from that. The steepest proportional jump in an Indian data science career happens between your first job and your third year, which is an argument for taking a reasonable first offer quickly rather than holding out for a headline number. And the 6-to-9-year sample is small, 2,800 against 35,400, so treat the Rs 20 lakh-plus figures as a direction of travel rather than a reliable median.
Does the employer matter more than the skills?
Early on, yes. AmbitionBox's employer bands for the same job title in India range from Rs 10.1 to 11.3 lakh at Infosys to Rs 20.1 to 22.2 lakh at Fractal Analytics. That is a two-times spread for identical work, measured across 426 and 759 salary reports respectively on 17 October 2026. Where you join sets your starting point.
| Employer | AmbitionBox band for Data Scientist | Salaries reported |
|---|---|---|
| Infosys | Rs 10.1 L – Rs 11.3 L | 426 |
| Tata Consultancy Services | Rs 10.5 L – Rs 11.6 L | 1,500 |
| Cognizant | Rs 12.1 L – Rs 13.4 L | 515 |
| Capgemini | Rs 15.4 L – Rs 17 L | 585 |
| Deloitte | Rs 16.8 L – Rs 18.5 L | 659 |
| Tiger Analytics | Rs 17.4 L – Rs 19.3 L | 644 |
| Accenture | Rs 17.5 L – Rs 19.4 L | 837 |
| IBM | Rs 19.5 L – Rs 21.5 L | 585 |
| Fractal Analytics | Rs 20.1 L – Rs 22.2 L | 759 |
The practical read: the large IT services firms are the volume hirers, and Naukri confirms it, with TCS posting 253 of the 3,852 Hyderabad adverts and Infosys 240. They pay the least per the bands above and they are also by far the easiest route into a first data role with no experience. Joining one and moving after two or three years is the most common Indian path to the Rs 15 lakh-plus bands, and it is a perfectly sensible plan.

What is a data scientist salary per month, and can it reach Rs 1 lakh?
PayScale India's average base of Rs 10,17,652 works out to about Rs 84,800 a month before tax, and the entry-level Rs 5,95,255 to about Rs 49,600. Rs 1 lakh a month means Rs 12 lakh a year, which the Indeed average of Rs 12,09,022 clears and the PayScale one-to-four-year average of Rs 10,05,147 does not.
Be careful with the arithmetic here, because this is where "per month" searches go wrong. An annual CTC divided by twelve is not your take-home. Provident fund, professional tax, gratuity and any variable component come out first, and a total-CTC figure of the sort AmbitionBox publishes may include a joining bonus you receive once. A Rs 12 lakh CTC in Hyderabad typically lands somewhere near Rs 80,000 to Rs 85,000 in hand, not Rs 1 lakh.
So the honest answer to "can a data scientist earn 1 lakh per month in India" is yes, and most reach it somewhere between year three and year five rather than at the start. In the Hyderabad advert data, 43 percent of all listings advertise Rs 10 to 15 lakh, but only 12 percent of the zero-year listings do.
Is data scientist a high paying job in India?
Yes, relative to most Indian graduate entry roles, but the premium arrives with experience rather than with the job title. PayScale India's average base of Rs 10,17,652 across 1,267 profiles is roughly 71 percent above its own entry-level figure of Rs 5,95,255, so the number nearly doubles between year one and the general average.
What it is not is a shortcut. A fresher data scientist offer in Hyderabad sits in much the same place as a fresher software engineer offer, and a fresher data analyst salary in India is not far below it either. The reason the title pays well later is that the work compounds: each year of shipped models and cleaned pipelines makes the next role easier to win. Nothing about the first offer is special.
Who earns more, a CA or a data scientist?
They land close in India, and the firm matters more than the qualification. A newly qualified Chartered Accountant and a one-to-four-year data scientist both sit broadly in the Rs 8 lakh to Rs 14 lakh band, with PayScale India putting the data scientist early-career average at Rs 10,05,147 on 9 July 2026. The paths differ far more than the pay.
Chartered Accountancy is one hard, standardised examination with a known pass mark and a regulated articleship. Data science has no gate at all, which cuts both ways: nobody can stop you entering, and nobody will certify that you belong. That is why portfolio evidence and reviewed project work do the job a CA qualification does, and why an unreviewed course certificate on its own moves very little.
Which skills actually move the number in 2026?
Generative AI has moved from a bonus to a line in the job title. The top Hyderabad advert at the five-year filter on 17 October 2026 was Infosys's "Data Scientist | Python | GenAI | LLM | RAG", and AmbitionBox lists Python, SQL, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning as the top skills attached to the title.
Underneath the headline skills, the Hyderabad advert data says something less glamorous and more useful. Of the 3,852 listings, 3,097 accepted Any Graduate and only 282 asked for an M.Tech, so a postgraduate degree is not the gate. 2,928 were work-from-office roles against 51 remote, so plan to be in the city. And Naukri filed 1,993 of them under Engineering, Software and QA rather than Data Science and Analytics, which tells you the screening will include ordinary software questions.
In other words: SQL and Python fluency get you read, statistics gets you through the technical round, and a generative-AI project you can walk through line by line is what currently separates two otherwise identical CVs. Deployment skills, Docker and a cloud provider, are the next lever after that.
Where does the AimNxt Data Science syllabus fit against these figures?
The AimNxt Data Science course runs twelve published module blocks, typically four to six months in classroom mode, and its sequence maps onto the skills Hyderabad adverts screen for. The first three blocks, Python and SQL, Stats and Data Visualization, are what the Rs 5 to 7 lakh entry roles test.
1. Python + SQL
Python tuples, loops, lambda functions, classes, SQL basics, stored procs. This block is what the entry-level analyst and data engineer adverts actually screen on.
2. Stats
Basic stats, covariance analysis methods, eigen values and eigen vectors, EDA. The technical round in a data interview lives here.
3. Data Visualization
Data visualization principles, chart types and usages, Tableau. Directly relevant to the Business Intelligence and Analytics roles that dominate the zero-year Hyderabad listings.
4. Supervised Learning
Introduction to ML, regression, KNNs, SVMs, Naive Bayes, DT and others.
5. unSupervised Learning
PCA, clustering, market basket analysis, cross validation, hyper parameter tuning.
6. Catch up Session / Doubt Clearing
A scheduled catch-up block, not an add-on. It exists because blocks 4 and 5 are where most learners first fall behind.
7. Deep Learning
Deep learning concepts, neural networks, types, predictive analytics using neural networks, CNN.
8. Computer Vision
Concepts, OpenCV, transfer learning, Keras and TensorFlow.
9. NLP
Vectorization, embeddings, encoders and decoders, RNNs, transformers.
10. LLMs and ChatGPT
Introduction to LLMs, prompt engineering and best practices with industry use cases — the block that answers the GenAI and LLM lines now appearing in Hyderabad job titles.
11. Catch up Session / Doubt Clearing
A second scheduled catch-up block before the capstone.
12. Capstone 3 Weeks
Three weeks on one reviewed project. This is the artefact you walk an interviewer through, and the reason a reviewed capstone is worth more than a certificate.
Module names and order above are quoted from the AimNxt Technologies LLP Data Science course content, which also lists prerequisites of basic mathematics, statistics and programming concepts, with Python familiarity recommended. If you are weighing this against the figures on this page, the AimNxt Data Science programme in Hyderabad runs classroom at KPHB 5th Phase in Kukatpally, live online or hybrid, and a trainer will mark the module list against your target role in a Free Live Demo Session. For the generative-AI blocks specifically, the Generative AI and Agentic AI training in Kukatpally goes considerably deeper than block 10 does.
