Ask Google this question from India and the page it puts first is 420 words long. Ask it again and look at what Google itself volunteers in the People Also Ask box, and the top question is "Who earns more, ML engineer or data scientist?" — answered, on an India-localised search, entirely in US dollars.
That is the state of this keyword on 16 October 2026. Eight pages explaining that data science is broad and machine learning is narrow. Not one of them checking either claim against a single Indian job advert or a single Indian salary figure.
So this guide does the comparison the other way round. Every number below came from naukri.com for Hyderabad and Secunderabad, and from PayScale India, read on 16 October 2026. Two of them are worth knowing before you read any further: the two job titles were advertised 3,875 and 3,741 times in the same city, and their average base pay is 0.5% apart.
What is the difference between data science and machine learning?
Data science is the whole job of turning raw data into a decision, and machine learning is one set of techniques used inside that job to make predictions. Every machine learning project is a data science project. Most data science work advertised in Hyderabad never reaches a model: it stops at cleaning, querying and reporting.
That is the textbook answer and it is correct. It is also almost useless if what you are really asking is which course to buy and which job to chase, which is what most people typing this phrase want to know. The rest of this page answers that version instead, using the six questions Google's own People Also Ask box shows for this query.
Why is Google answering this question in US dollars?
Google's People Also Ask box for this query answers "who earns more" with United States medians, roughly $165,000 for a machine learning engineer against $158,000 for a data scientist, even on an India-localised search. That 15 to 40 percent premium is a real American pattern. Indian salary data does not reproduce it.
The sources it pulls from are a Reddit thread, Coursera, 365 Data Science, a Medium post and a Quora answer. All competent, all written about the American market. Nothing in that block is wrong; it is simply answering a different country's question, and it is the figure most Indian readers will see first and remember.
Does machine learning fall under data science?
Machine learning sits inside artificial intelligence as a field of study, and inside data science as a stage of work, which is why the two answers you find online contradict each other. GeeksforGeeks, ranking first for this query, calls machine learning a subset of artificial intelligence in one paragraph and a subset of data science in another.
Both statements are defensible, because they answer different questions. Where does the subject belong academically? Under artificial intelligence. Where does it belong on a Monday morning? In the middle of a data science workflow, after someone has already found, cleaned and understood the data. If you want that workflow laid out end to end first, our beginner's guide to what data science actually is walks through it stage by stage.
What do Hyderabad job adverts say the difference is?
Hyderabad advertised 3,875 data scientist roles and 3,741 machine learning engineer roles on 16 October 2026, and for both titles the largest single department was Engineering, Software and QA rather than Data Science and Analytics. Employers are hiring both as engineering work. Read live from Naukri, filtered to Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
That department field is the most useful thing on the page, and it is the measured version of the textbook claim. Employers file 2,017 of the 3,875 data scientist adverts and 1,728 of the 3,741 machine learning engineer adverts under software engineering. Whichever of the two titles you aim at in this city, you are being hired to write production code, not to produce slide decks.

Who earns more in India, a machine learning engineer or a data scientist?
In India the two are effectively level: PayScale reports an average base of Rs 10,22,861 for a machine learning engineer and Rs 10,17,652 for a data scientist, a gap of Rs 5,209 or about half a percent. At one to four years, the data scientist average is actually higher.
This is the opposite of the American pattern Google is serving. On PayScale India, early-career data scientists at one to four years average Rs 10,05,147 against Rs 8,40,657 for machine learning engineers at the same stage, which puts the data scientist roughly 19 percent ahead. Entry level is a dead heat: Rs 5,95,255 against Rs 5,96,082, a difference of Rs 827 a year.
| PayScale India, read 16 Oct 2026 | Data Scientist | Machine Learning Engineer |

| Average base salary | Rs 10,17,652 | Rs 10,22,861 |
| Entry level, under 1 year | Rs 5,95,255 | Rs 5,96,082 |

Sources: PayScale, Data Scientist salary in India and PayScale, Machine Learning Engineer salary in India, both read 16 October 2026. These are self-reported market estimates, not guarantees, and they depend on experience, employer and interview performance. The machine learning engineer figure rests on 232 profiles against 1,267 for data scientist, so treat it as the less settled of the two numbers.
Which is better, machine learning or data science?
Neither is better in Hyderabad in 2026, because the advert volumes, the salary bands and the education filters are almost identical; what differs is the kind of work and the shape of the ceiling. Machine learning engineering pays a higher top end, Rs 30 lakh against Rs 20 lakh at the ninetieth percentile.
So the honest framing is not better or worse but wider or taller. Data science is the wider door at one to four years and the better-evidenced average. Machine learning engineering is the taller ladder once you can ship and maintain software. Most people in this city arrive at the second through the first, which is why the shared foundation matters more than the choice of label.

The gap between PayScale India's average base pay for the two titles in July 2026. The 15 to 40 percent premium Google quotes is a US figure, not an Indian one.
1,728 of 3,741
Machine learning engineer adverts in Hyderabad filed under Engineering, Software and QA, against 1,083 under Data Science and Analytics. This is an engineering job in practice.
Rs 30 lakh
Machine learning engineer ninetieth percentile base pay on PayScale India, against Rs 20 lakh for data scientist. The ceiling is where the two genuinely diverge.
125 vs 64
Hyderabad adverts open to zero years, machine learning engineer against data scientist. Twice as wide, but 16 of the 125 are unpaid internships.
Which of the two tracks fits you?
Pick the track by what you want to spend your day doing, not by which title sounds more senior. The three questions below map your background, your appetite for software engineering and your target first role onto one of two AimNxt programmes, and tell you plainly which module blocks you would be living in for the next few months.
The picker scores your three answers against the two tracks, then names the AimNxt module blocks each track leans on. It is a guidance aid built on the published syllabus and the advert data above, not a prediction and not a hiring promise.
What does each role actually do day to day?
A data scientist spends most of the week on SQL, cleaning, exploratory analysis and explaining a result to a business owner; a machine learning engineer spends most of it on Python services, pipelines, deployment and monitoring a model that is already live. Both write code. Only one is judged on uptime.
The clearest tell is what breaks your week. For a data scientist it is a number that does not reconcile, or a stakeholder who does not believe the result. For a machine learning engineer it is a prediction endpoint timing out at two in the morning. If being on the hook for a running system sounds like a burden rather than a craft, that is a real answer about which side you belong on.
Which skills overlap, and which do not?
Python, SQL, statistics and the core model families are shared ground, so roughly the first half of any serious curriculum serves both roles. The split starts after the model works: a data scientist adds visualisation and communication, while a machine learning engineer adds Docker, cloud deployment, APIs and monitoring.
This is the practical reason we do not run two separate beginner tracks. The twelve-block Data Science programme at our KPHB 5th Phase campus teaches the shared half properly — Python plus SQL, Stats, Data Visualization, then Supervised and unSupervised Learning — before anyone has to decide which door they are walking through. The Hyderabad adverts justify that order: both titles screen on the same foundation.

Which course is better, an AIML course or a data science course?
For a beginner in Hyderabad a data science course is the safer first purchase, because its Python, SQL and statistics foundation is the entry requirement for both tracks, while an AIML-only syllabus assumes you already have it. Check the module list before you pay, not the course name.
Course names are marketing; module lists are the product. If a syllabus labelled AIML opens with neural networks and never mentions SQL, it is a second course, not a first one. If you are specifically after the large language model and agent side of the work, that is what the Generative AI and Agentic AI programme in Kukatpally is built for, and it expects the Python foundation on day one.
Will AI replace data scientists?
Generative AI is changing what the job asks for rather than removing it: Hyderabad listings now routinely name large language models, retrieval augmented generation and LangChain inside data scientist adverts. Infosys advertised a Hyderabad data scientist role naming GenAI, LLM and RAG in its title, at two to five years.
Read the adverts rather than the headlines. In the same Hyderabad search on 16 October 2026, EY tagged a data scientist role at one to six years with agentic AI, LangGraph, retrieval augmented generation, function calling, Semantic Kernel and LangChain. Fractal Analytics advertised "Data Scientist, Gen AI" at one to six years. The title survived; the required toolkit moved. What is genuinely at risk is the narrow version of the job that only produced charts.
Where does machine learning sit in the AimNxt Data Science syllabus?
Machine learning occupies the middle of the AimNxt Data Science programme: of twelve published module blocks, Supervised Learning, unSupervised Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, NLP and LLMs and ChatGPT are machine learning, while Python plus SQL, Stats and Data Visualization come before them. Classroom duration is typically four to six months.
The table below is the published block list in its published order, unedited. It is the clearest answer to the headline question we can give you: three blocks of data science groundwork, six blocks of machine learning, two catch-up blocks and a reviewed capstone. Machine learning is not the course. It is the middle half of it.
| # | AimNxt Data Science module block | Published sub-topics | Data science or machine learning? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Python + SQL | Python tuples, loops, lambda functions, classes, SQL basics, stored procs | Shared foundation |
| 2 | Stats | Basic stats, covariance analysis methods, eigen values and eigen vectors, EDA | Shared foundation |
| 3 | Data Visualization | Data visualization principles, chart types and usages, Tableau | Data science |

Module names and sub-topics are quoted verbatim from the AimNxt Technologies LLP Data Science course content, including its own capitalisation of "unSupervised Learning". Published prerequisites are basic mathematics, statistics and programming concepts, with Python familiarity recommended. Stated typical classroom duration is four to six months. The "data science or machine learning" column is our own mapping, offered to answer this article's question. AimNxt is an independent training provider and does not administer vendor examinations; the award on completion is an AimNxt certificate of completion.
Is either one realistic for a fresher in Hyderabad right now?
At the zero-years filter Hyderabad showed 125 machine learning engineer adverts and 64 data scientist adverts on 16 October 2026, so the machine learning side of the door is roughly twice as wide, but 16 of those 125 are unpaid internships. Both entries are narrow.
Set that against 3,875 and 3,741 adverts once experience is on the table and the picture is honest rather than discouraging: the hard part is year one, not the field. The route most of our KPHB students take is an adjacent data role first, then the title. We lay that sequence out properly in our 2026 roadmap for becoming a data scientist in India, including what the fresher-open listings actually contain.
Which is also where the AimNxt Job Interview Guarantee program fits. It commits to guaranteed interview opportunities through our 110-plus hiring partner network until you are placement-ready. It is not a guaranteed job and not a guaranteed salary — outcomes depend on your skills, your projects and how you interview. Anyone promising you more than that on a comparison like this one is selling you something.
