Google's first page for this question is eight definition pages. IBM, Amazon Web Services, Coursera, W3Schools, Berkeley, Harvard, GeeksforGeeks and a university blog. They all say roughly the same sentence, and the sentence is correct. The Indian page on that list runs to about 350 words of actual article and carries three headings.
Now change the search to "what is data science 2026" and the page turns over completely. Reddit threads with a hundred-odd comments asking whether the field is still worth entering. A Medium post titled "Data Science in 2026: Prepare to Be Uncomfortable". Towards Data Science asking "Is It Still Worth It?". Google knows what people are really asking. The definition pages are answering a different question.
So this guide does both. The definition first, because you asked for it and it should be short. Then the part nobody on that first page publishes: which of these jobs will actually hire you, and how narrow the door is. Every job figure below was read from naukri.com for Hyderabad and Secunderabad on 14 October 2026, and we have put the uncomfortable numbers in rather than leave them out.
What is data science?
Data science is the practice of using statistics, programming and domain knowledge to turn raw data into decisions a business can act on. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts it more plainly: data scientists use analytical tools and techniques to extract meaningful insights from data. In Hyderabad, 3,732 live adverts currently carry that job title.
Two words in that definition do the real work. "Decisions", because an analysis nobody acts on is a hobby. And "domain knowledge", because a model of hospital readmissions built by somebody who has never spoken to a doctor will be technically clean and practically useless. The statistics and the programming are the part a course can teach you in a few months. The judgement takes longer.
What data science is not: a single job title you apply for after a three-month course. That is the misreading this page exists to correct, and the numbers further down show exactly how expensive the misreading is in Hyderabad.
The whole guide in four lines
Data science turns data into decisions. It is hired as four separate jobs, not one. In Hyderabad the four jobs have almost identical advert volume but the fresher door varies by 4.4 times, and it runs backwards from what the brochures imply. Start with the job that is actually hiring freshers, then move across.
What is data science in simple words?
In simple words, data science is asking a question, finding the data that answers it, cleaning that data until it is usable, building a model that predicts something, then explaining the result to somebody who is not technical. The last step decides whether you keep the job. Most beginners rehearse only the model-building step.
Here is the version a trainer uses in a first class. A retail chain wants to know which customers are about to stop buying. Somebody has to decide what "about to stop" even means in months. Somebody has to pull two years of transactions out of a database that spells the same city four different ways. Somebody has to notice that half the rows are a pricing test and throw them out. Only then does anyone fit a model.
That first half is where the time goes, and it is why Python and SQL sit at the front of every honest syllabus rather than at the end.
What are the steps in a real data science project?
A data science project runs through six steps: frame the question, collect the data, clean it, explore it, model it, then communicate and monitor the result. Cleaning and exploring take most of the calendar. The AimNxt Data Science curriculum follows that order too, opening with Python and SQL and statistics before any machine learning module.
The step everybody forgets is the last one. A model that was accurate in March is often wrong by September because the customers changed, not because the maths broke. Monitoring and retraining is an ordinary part of the job, and it is the reason employers ask for engineering habits — version control, repeatable scripts, documented assumptions — alongside statistics.
Frame the question
Turn "why are sales down" into something measurable with a date range, a definition and a success test. Get this wrong and everything after it is wasted.
Collect the data
Usually SQL against a warehouse, sometimes an API or a file somebody emails you. This is why SQL is the most-advertised skill in the whole field.
Clean it
Missing values, duplicate rows, four spellings of one city, timestamps in two time zones. The least glamorous step and reliably the longest.
Explore it
Exploratory data analysis. Distributions, correlations, outliers. Half the time the answer is here and no model is needed at all.
Model it
Regression, classification, clustering, or a neural network if the problem genuinely calls for one. The step courses spend the most time selling.
Communicate and monitor
One chart and three sentences a manager can act on, then watch the model as the world shifts under it. This is the step that gets people promoted.
What exactly does a data scientist do?
A data scientist decides which data is relevant, gathers and cleans it, builds and maintains models including machine learning models, presents findings to technical and non-technical audiences, and advises on business decisions. Those five duties are the US Bureau of Labor Statistics list, and Hyderabad adverts ask for the same five, in a different order.
What the list hides is the split of the week. In most Indian product and services teams a data scientist spends more time in SQL, spreadsheets and meetings than in a modelling notebook. The modelling is the interesting fifteen per cent. Candidates who have only ever practised the interesting fifteen per cent interview badly, because the first screening round is almost always SQL.
Is data science one job, or four?
Data science is sold as one job and hired as four: data analyst, data engineer, data scientist and machine learning engineer. In Hyderabad and Secunderabad on 14 October 2026 the four titles returned 3,249, 4,118, 3,732 and 3,617 live adverts on naukri.com — within 27 per cent of each other, so no single title dominates.
That is the first thing a beginner needs and nobody on the first page of Google says it. The four jobs sit on the same project at different points. The data engineer builds the pipes that move the data. The analyst answers questions about what already happened. The data scientist builds the thing that predicts what happens next. The machine learning engineer puts that prediction into a live product and keeps it running.
They need overlapping but genuinely different skills, they are interviewed differently, and they do not pay the same. Treating them as one career is how people spend eight months on deep learning for a role whose first interview round is a window function. We walk through the two closest of the four in detail in our guide on data analyst vs data scientist.
| Job title searched | Live Hyderabad adverts | Open to 0 years | Fresher door | What it actually does |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Analyst | 3,249 | 157 | 4.8% | Explains what already happened. SQL, Excel, a BI tool. |
| Machine Learning Engineer | 3,617 | 116 | 3.2% | Ships models into live products and keeps them running. |
| Data Scientist | 3,732 | 59 | 1.6% | Builds the prediction. Statistics plus modelling plus communication. |
| Data Engineer | 4,118 | 47 | 1.1% | Builds and maintains the pipelines everyone else depends on. |

How many data science jobs in Hyderabad are open to freshers?
Of 3,732 data scientist adverts in Hyderabad and Secunderabad, only 59 accept zero years of experience — 1.6 per cent — and eight of those 59 are unpaid internships. Read on naukri.com on 14 October 2026. The data analyst title, with fewer adverts overall, returned 157 at zero years, a door 2.7 times wider.
Then the inversion. Total advert volume across the four titles varies by 27 per cent. The fresher door varies by 4.4 times, and it runs backwards: the title with the fewest adverts overall has the widest fresher door, and the title with the most has the narrowest. Every course page in this city points you at "data scientist". The measured door for it here is 59.
It gets more specific when you open the 59. By role category, 20 are filed under business intelligence and analytics, 11 under software development, and only 10 under data science and machine learning. Reading the first twenty listings by title, not one is a plain "Data Scientist" fresher post. They are data analyst roles, data science and data engineering internships, two listings titled data annotator, and one that states it will consider freshers from IITs and NITs only.
The machine learning number carries a trap too. Of the 116 listings open to zero years, ten sit in the teaching and training department and six in a subject-specialisation teacher role category, with sixteen unpaid internships on top. Part of the widest-looking fresher opening in machine learning is teaching machine learning, not doing it.
59 of 3,732
Hyderabad data scientist adverts open to zero years of experience, 1.6 per cent, read 14 October 2026. Eight are unpaid internships.
52% filed as software
1,939 of the 3,732 data scientist adverts sit in the Engineering, Software and QA department, against 1,232 in Data Science and Analytics.
1,902 want a postgrad
51 per cent of those adverts filter to Any Postgraduate, against 664 that name B.Tech or B.E. A real gate, and nobody mentions it.
43 remote
Of 3,732 adverts, 2,881 are work from office, 808 hybrid and 43 remote. Learning online does not mean working remotely.
Which data role should you aim at first?
Pick your first target by the door that is open to you now, not by the title you eventually want. Answer the three questions below and the tool ranks all four data roles against the live Hyderabad advert counts, then names the one worth aiming at first and what to do about the other three later.
Scores start from the live Hyderabad fresher counts read on 14 October 2026 (data analyst 157, machine learning engineer 116, data scientist 59, data engineer 47) and are then adjusted by your three answers. It is a shortlisting aid built on public advert counts, not a prediction and not a hiring promise.
What is the difference between data science and data analytics?
Data analytics explains what already happened; data science predicts what happens next. An analyst answers "which products lost margin last quarter" with SQL and a dashboard. A data scientist answers "which customers will churn next quarter" with a trained model. On AmbitionBox the data analyst designation carries about 1.5 lakh reported salaries against 61,500 for data scientist.
That ratio matters more than the definitions. On the same salary site, roughly 2.4 times as many people in India report their job as data analyst. It is the larger population, the wider fresher door and the shorter runway, which is why the honest recommendation for most beginners in Hyderabad is to enter as an analyst and move across once you have production data experience and somebody paying you to learn.
Nothing about that path is a downgrade. Almost every data scientist we train in Kukatpally arrived from an analyst, support or developer seat. If that is the route you are on, the AimNxt Data Analytics programme at KPHB 5th Phase covers the Excel, SQL, Power BI and Python block that first door is screened on, and our write-up on what a data analyst actually does describes the day job before you commit to it.
What skills do you actually need for data science?
Five: Python, SQL, statistics, one visualisation tool, and the ability to explain a result in three sentences. AmbitionBox lists Python, SQL, machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence as the top reported skills for the data scientist designation. SQL comes first in interviews even though it comes last in the marketing.
Take them in that order and the reason becomes obvious. SQL is how you get the data, so the screening round tests it. Python is how you shape and model the data. Statistics is how you know whether the result means anything, and it is the skill most self-taught candidates skip and most interviewers probe. A visualisation tool is how the answer reaches a decision-maker. The explanation is what gets you hired over somebody with better accuracy scores.
What is not on the list: a sixth framework. Candidates arrive with TensorFlow on the CV and no window functions, and the interview ends in the first twenty minutes. Depth in the first three beats breadth across ten.

What does a data science course actually cover?
A complete data science syllabus moves from Python and SQL, through statistics and visualisation, into supervised and unsupervised learning, then deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing and large language models, finishing on a capstone project. The AimNxt Data Science curriculum publishes exactly that sequence across twelve module blocks.
The order is the part worth checking when you compare courses. A syllabus that opens on machine learning has skipped the half of the job where the time actually goes, and a syllabus that never reaches a reviewed project has not prepared you for the only question that matters in an interview: show me something you built. Two of the twelve AimNxt blocks are deliberately catch-up and doubt-clearing sessions rather than new content, which is an admission most brochures will not make.
Below are the module names and sub-topics exactly as AimNxt publishes them in its Data Science course content. We have not renamed or reordered anything.

The same document states a typical classroom duration of four to six months and lists basic mathematics, statistics and programming concepts as prerequisites, with Python familiarity recommended. Module order and capitalisation are as published.
What does the AimNxt Data Science programme include?
Twelve published module blocks running four to six months in classroom mode, from Python and SQL through to large language models, closing on a three-week capstone project. Delivery is classroom at KPHB 5th Phase in Kukatpally, live online, or hybrid, with industry-expert trainers and an AimNxt certificate of completion.
Two details are worth knowing before you book anything. The first is that the AimNxt Data Science programme in Kukatpally carries the AimNxt Job Interview Guarantee program, which guarantees interview opportunities through a hiring-partner network of more than 110 companies. It does not guarantee a job, a placement or a salary, and any institute that tells you otherwise is describing something it cannot control.
The second is that AimNxt is an independent training provider. We prepare students for vendor exams; we do not administer them and we are not a vendor partner. The certificate you receive from us is an AimNxt certificate of completion, which is a different thing from a vendor credential, and we would rather you heard that from us than discovered it later.
We do not publish fees on blog pages. If you want the fee, the batch timings and the full taught-hours figure, ask for them in a Free Live Demo Session and we will put the answers in writing.
Is data science difficult to learn?
Data science is not conceptually difficult, but it is unusually wide, and the width is what defeats people. You are learning a programming language, a query language, applied statistics, a visualisation tool and a communication skill at once. Most people who drop out stop in the statistics block, not the machine learning block.
The genuinely hard parts, in order: statistics that you have to reason with rather than recite, debugging data rather than code, and accepting that a well-built model can still be the wrong answer to the business question. None of that needs a mathematics degree. It needs a few months of consistent, corrected practice, which is a different thing from a few months of watching videos.
The practical test is simple. If you can sit with a messy spreadsheet for two hours and feel curious rather than irritated, you will be fine. If that sounds unbearable, the field will be a grind regardless of how good the course is.
Which is better, computer science or data science?
For a first degree, computer science is the safer choice; data science is the better specialisation on top of it. Hyderabad's own adverts make the case: 1,939 of 3,732 data scientist listings sit in the Engineering, Software and QA department, and 1,612 fall under a software development role category.
Read that honestly and it says employers largely treat data science as a software engineering specialism. A computer science graduate can move into data science; the reverse move, from a narrow data science degree into general software engineering, is harder because the fundamentals were traded away for tooling. If you already hold a data science degree this is not bad news, but it does mean treating programming as a first-class skill rather than a support one.
For working professionals the question usually does not arise. You have the degree you have, and what decides the outcome is whether you can show three projects and pass a SQL round.
Do you need a master's degree to get into data science?
Not formally, but in Hyderabad the adverts lean postgraduate. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for data scientists, noting some roles require a master's or doctorate. Yet 1,902 of 3,732 Hyderabad adverts — 51 per cent — filter to Any Postgraduate, against 664 naming B.Tech or B.E.
That is a gate worth seeing before you plan around it. It is not absolute: Any Graduate still matched 3,022 of the same adverts, so the postgraduate filter is a preference in the listing rather than a hard bar in most cases. But it does explain why freshers with only a bachelor's find the data scientist title harder to enter than the job description suggests, and it is another argument for entering at analyst level and converting later.
One live example from the fresher set makes the point without us editorialising. Among the 59 listings open to zero years was a data engineering fresher post stating it would consider candidates from IITs and NITs only. Filters like that exist. Knowing they exist is more useful than being surprised by them.
What can you earn in data science in India?
AmbitionBox reports a typical data scientist range of Rs 15.3 lakh to Rs 16.9 lakh per year for one to eight years of experience, from 61,600 reported salaries, with Hyderabad at Rs 15.7 lakh to Rs 17.4 lakh. These are market estimates, not guarantees, and they depend on experience, employer and interview performance.
Now the detail that answers the question people are really asking. AmbitionBox publishes experience bands for this designation starting at one to three years. There is no zero-to-one-year band at all. The site has 61,600 salaries for the title and still cannot produce a fresher figure, which lines up exactly with the 59 fresher adverts we counted in Hyderabad. If a course page quotes you a fresher data scientist salary, ask where the number came from.
The employer spread is the other thing to plan around. On the same page, Infosys reports Rs 9.8 lakh to Rs 11 lakh and Tata Consultancy Services Rs 10.4 lakh to Rs 11.5 lakh, while Fractal Analytics reports Rs 20.1 lakh to Rs 22.2 lakh and IBM Rs 19.5 lakh to Rs 21.6 lakh. That is roughly double, for the same job title, in the same country. Where you work matters as much as what you know.
| Where you look | Reported range (per year) | Sample | Read this as |
|---|---|---|---|
| India, 0–1 year | Not published | — | No fresher band exists for this designation. That is the honest answer. |
| India, 1–3 years | Top 10% Rs 11.3 L – 12.5 L | 24,100 salaries | The first band that exists. Note it is the top decile, not the average. |
| India, 3–6 years | Top 10% Rs 15 L – 16.6 L | 35,400 salaries | The largest sample on the page. This is the real mid-career picture. |
| India, 6–9 years | Top 10% Rs 20.5 L – 22.7 L | 2,800 salaries | Thin sample. Many people change title by this point. |
| Hyderabad, all experience | Rs 15.7 L – 17.4 L | 7,200 salaries | Blended across experience. Second to Bengaluru's Rs 15.9 L – 17.6 L. |
| Large Indian IT services | Rs 9.8 L – 11.5 L | Infosys, TCS, Cognizant | The realistic first-offer landscape at scale employers. |

Is it worth becoming a data scientist in 2026?
Yes, if you enter through a door that is actually open and expect a two-to-three-year run-up rather than a six-month one. The field is not shrinking — Hyderabad carries 14,716 live adverts across the four data titles — but the fresher entry point has narrowed to 1.6 per cent for the data scientist title specifically.
The anxiety on Reddit is not irrational, and it is worth naming rather than dismissing. Large language models have absorbed a chunk of the routine work: boilerplate code, first-pass exploratory analysis, chart generation. What they have not absorbed is deciding which question is worth asking, knowing whether a result is trustworthy, and being accountable for a decision. That is the part that was always the job.
What has genuinely changed is the entry level. The tasks a fresher used to be hired to do are the tasks most easily automated, which is one plain explanation for why the fresher door is narrow. The practical response is to enter where hiring still happens, build visible production experience, and keep moving. It is also why a syllabus that reaches large language models and prompt engineering, as the AimNxt module list does, is more useful in 2026 than one that stops at regression.
How do you start learning data science in Hyderabad?
Start with SQL and Python for about eight weeks, add statistics and one visualisation tool, build three projects somebody reviews, then target analyst roles while you continue into machine learning. Hyderabad has no shortage of institutes — a Justdial directory search for KPHB alone lists more than 800.
Which is precisely the problem with choosing one. On the Hyderabad results we read, providers variously describe themselves as number one, as the only institute in Asia offering their kind of job assistance, and as having trained and placed twenty thousand students. None of that is checkable. Four things are: total taught hours, whether a trainer corrects your code and tells you it is wrong, how many projects get reviewed and returned, and exactly what the certificate is.
Ask those four in writing at two institutes in the same week, and sit a free demo at both. If you want the fuller version of that shortlisting method, with the arithmetic for comparing fees against taught hours, it is in our guide on how to judge a data course in Hyderabad. And if you are starting from zero with the analyst route in mind, the step order is laid out in how to become a data analyst in India.
