Search this question and you will get the same answer nine times. Learn Excel, learn SQL, learn Python, learn Power BI or Tableau, build a portfolio, apply. It is not wrong. It is just not a roadmap — it is a shopping list, and the longest version of it we read while researching this article had twelve steps, which is a syllabus pretending to be a plan.
The part nobody writes down is the order, and the order is where people lose six months. A commerce graduate who starts with Python because a video said Python is the future will spend eight weeks on loops and functions before touching a dataset, and will still fail the first interview round, because the first interview round is SQL. Meanwhile someone who started with SQL is already being shortlisted.
So this is the roadmap written the other way round — in the sequence a hiring process actually tests you in, with the real timeline attached, the salary numbers read from AmbitionBox on 12 October 2026 rather than copied from another blog, and the Hyderabad figures that no national guide on this query bothers to include. Where a number is a market estimate rather than a fact, it says so.
How do you become a data analyst in India?
To become a data analyst in India, learn four skills in sequence — Excel, then SQL, then a BI tool such as Power BI, then Python — and publish three or four projects built on real datasets while you learn them. Any graduate degree is accepted. Most career changers reach interview-ready in five to nine months, not three.
That sequence is not arbitrary. It mirrors how Indian employers screen: a spreadsheet or SQL test first, a dashboard or case round second, and a conversation about your projects third. Python usually appears in the job description and rarely in the first screening round, which is exactly why it belongs fourth rather than first.
Qualifications matter far less than this order does. Google's own AI Overview for this search lists a quantitative bachelor's degree as step one, which is not how most entry-level postings work — a B.Com graduate with a working dashboard is shortlisted ahead of a B.Tech graduate without one.
The one-line version
Excel for thinking in tables, SQL to get the data out, Power BI to make someone act on it, Python to do at scale what you already understand. Projects run alongside all four, never after them.
What qualifications do you need to become a data analyst in India?
No specific qualification is required: any bachelor's degree is accepted by almost every entry-level data analyst posting in India, and the requirement that actually filters candidates is demonstrable tool skill plus a portfolio. A quantitative degree helps marginally. A finished SQL and Power BI project helps considerably more.
The degree myth persists because career-guidance sites rank on this keyword by listing degrees, entrance exams and postgraduate options — content that is easy to write and matches what a worried parent expects. The hiring side does not work that way. Analyst teams at the IT services firms hiring across Hyderabad screen on a test, not a transcript.
Where your degree does matter is comfort with numbers. If you have never done a statistics course, budget an extra three to four weeks for descriptive statistics, distributions and the difference between correlation and cause, because every case round probes it. If you came through B.Tech, B.Sc or B.Com with any quantitative paper, you can skip that detour.
Degree
Any bachelor's degree. B.Com, BA Economics, B.Sc, BCA and B.Tech all appear in analyst teams. Final-year students can start now.
Maths needed
Descriptive statistics, percentages, averages versus medians, and basic probability. Not calculus, not linear algebra.
Certification
Optional, and useful mainly for CV keywords. Microsoft's PL-300 is the most recognised one for Power BI work in India.
What is required
Three to four published projects with the dataset, the SQL, the dashboard and a written finding. This is the real entry ticket.
Which data analyst skills should you learn, and in what order?
Learn Excel first, SQL second, Power BI or Tableau third, and Python fourth — four blocks, not twelve steps. AmbitionBox lists SQL, Excel, Power BI, Python and Tableau as the top reported skills for the Data Analyst role in India, and that order also matches the sequence Indian interview rounds test them in.
Each block earns its position for a reason, and knowing the reason stops you abandoning one halfway. Excel teaches you to think in rows, columns and keys, which is the mental model everything else depends on. SQL is the gate: if you cannot write a join and a group-by under observation, the conversation ends there, and it ends there in roughly the first twenty minutes. A BI tool is what turns your answer into something a manager acts on. Python is the force multiplier you add once you already know what you are automating.
This is also the structure AimNxt teaches it in. The Data Analyst course in Hyderabad is published as four module blocks in this same sequence — Advanced Excel for Data Analysis, Power BI for business intelligence and reporting, SQL for Data Management using Oracle SQL, and Python for Data Analysis — across a 90-day programme run classroom at KPHB, online or hybrid. The published module order and the interview order are the same thing, which is not a coincidence.
1. Advanced Excel for Data Analysis
Core Excel skills, pivot tables and charts, data analytics concepts, range names and table management, and data cleaning. Four to six weeks. Done when you can take a messy 50,000-row export and answer a business question from it unaided.
2. SQL for Data Management (Oracle SQL)
SQL foundations, advanced SQL and database management. Six to eight weeks, and the block worth over-investing in. Joins, group-by, subqueries and window functions are what the first screening round is made of.
3. Power BI — Business Intelligence & Reporting
Visualisations and tiles, reports and dashboards, publishing and workspaces, and Power BI Desktop with data modelling. Four to six weeks. Power Query and DAX are the real difficulty, not the chart picker.
4. Python for Data Analysis
Python basics, data structures and the analytics libraries — pandas and NumPy. Four to six weeks. Learn it to repeat work you can already do by hand, not as a first language.
Two things are deliberately absent from that list. Machine learning is not a data analyst skill at entry level, whatever a course brochure implies; it belongs to the data science track, and chasing it early is the single most common way freshers delay their first job. R is fine and almost nobody in India asks for it — if you are choosing, choose Python.
How long does it take — can you learn data analysis in 3 months?
Three months is enough to become employable only if you can commit around 25 hours a week and you already use Excel at work; from a standing start, five to nine months is the honest range. The four skill blocks need roughly 20 to 26 weeks of study plus project time, which does not compress by wishing.
The reason the three-month claim keeps circulating is that it is true for a specific person: someone already working in MIS, reporting, operations or accounts who handles spreadsheets daily. That person starts at block two and has business context already, which is half of what interviewers are testing. A final-year student with no work history is not that person, and being sold the same timeline is how motivation dies in month four.
The builder below works out the version that applies to you. Pick your starting point, the hours you can genuinely protect each week, and how you are studying. It runs entirely in your browser, nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere.
Estimates built from the block hours in this article, not a promise about your specific situation. Self-study carries a time penalty because nobody corrects your SQL, which is the most common reason a six-month plan becomes a ten-month one.

What does a data analyst portfolio actually need?
Three to four finished projects, each showing the raw dataset, the SQL that shaped it, the dashboard built from it and one written paragraph stating what you found and what you would do about it. The written finding is the part most candidates skip, and it is the part interviewers read first.
A portfolio of eleven Kaggle notebooks with no conclusion in any of them is worth less than one project where you looked at six months of sales data and wrote four sentences explaining why returns spiked in the north zone. Employers are not buying your ability to run code. They are buying your willingness to commit to an answer in front of a manager who disagrees.
Pick datasets with a business shape, and say what was wrong with the data before you cleaned it. Government open-data portals, a retail transactions export and a census extract all work. Domain familiarity beats dataset glamour — a B.Com graduate analysing receivables is more convincing than the same person analysing football statistics.
What each project should contain
What does a data analyst earn in India?
AmbitionBox puts the typical Data Analyst salary in India at Rs 6.5 to 7.2 lakh a year across 0 to 6 years of experience, from about 1.5 lakh reported salaries, updated 11 October 2026. Freshers sit well below that: the 0 to 1 year band shows Rs 3.6 to 5.2 lakh. These are self-reported market estimates, not guarantees.
That gap is worth understanding, because it is where most readers get misled. Google's AI Overview for this search quotes Rs 2.5 to 5 lakh for freshers while aggregator headlines advertise Rs 6.5 to 7.2 lakh, and both are technically correct — the higher figure blends six years of experience into one average. When a course advertisement shows you a seven-lakh number next to the word fresher, that is the arithmetic being used on you.
The company-level data is more useful than any average. On the same AmbitionBox page, the large IT services employers hiring across Hyderabad report narrow and consistent bands: TCS Rs 4.1 to 4.5 lakh, Cognizant Rs 4.2 to 4.6 lakh, Capgemini Rs 4.3 to 4.8 lakh, Infosys Rs 4.3 to 4.7 lakh, Wipro Rs 4.1 to 4.5 lakh, Accenture Rs 5.3 to 5.9 lakh and Deloitte Rs 7.1 to 7.9 lakh. That is the realistic first-offer landscape, and it is also why the second job matters more than the first.

Is data analyst a good career in India in 2026?
Yes, with one condition: it is a good career if you treat it as an entry point rather than a destination. AmbitionBox records about 1.5 lakh reported Data Analyst salaries and 888 open listings for the role in India, and notes average pay rising about 16 per cent over the last two years. The title itself, though, is a doorway.
Analysts move in three directions within three or four years, and all three pay better than staying put: deeper into business intelligence and analytics engineering, sideways into a domain role such as risk, marketing or supply-chain analytics, or forward into data science and machine learning. The reason the 3 to 6 year band jumps to Rs 7.2 to 7.9 lakh is mostly people who picked one of those three and specialised.
Hyderabad is a genuinely strong place to do this, and the national guides on this search never mention it. On the same AmbitionBox location breakdown, Hyderabad reports Rs 6.8 to 7.5 lakh from 18,200 salaries — second only to Bengaluru at Rs 7 to 7.7 lakh, and ahead of Pune, Delhi and Chennai. With the analytics and GCC hiring concentrated in HITEC City and Gachibowli, a KPHB base puts you roughly 40 minutes from most of it on the metro.
Can AI replace a data analyst?
No, but it has already replaced part of the job, and the part it replaced is the part freshers used to be hired for. Generating a SQL query, cleaning a column or drafting a chart is now close to free. Deciding which question is worth asking, and whether a number is believable, is not.
This is a real PAA question on this search, and most career guides answer it with reassurance instead of specifics. The specifics are these: copy-paste report refreshing and basic data wrangling are being automated fastest, so a candidate whose only skill is producing a chart from a clean file is in a weaker position than they would have been in 2023. The counterweight is that AI tools are confidently wrong in ways only someone who understands the data catches.
Practically, it changes two things about this roadmap. Learn to validate output rather than just produce it — always know what a plausible answer looks like before you run the query. And lean harder on the written-finding habit from the portfolio section, because judgement, business context and the willingness to defend a recommendation are the parts of the role nothing has automated.
Can you become a data analyst with no experience?
Yes — freshers are hired into data analyst roles in India every month, but almost always through one of four doors rather than a direct application. A published portfolio substitutes for experience; a certificate on its own does not. Expect six to eight weeks of applying after your skills are ready.
The four doors, in rough order of how well they work: an internship or trainee programme that converts, which is the most reliable route for a final-year student; an internal move from an adjacent role such as MIS, reporting, operations or support, where you already have the business context; a referral from someone who has seen your project work, which is why publishing it publicly matters; and a direct application backed by a portfolio strong enough to survive the SQL round.
What does not work is applying with a certificate and no artefacts. Hyderabad fresher listings on this role — the Nova Technologies, Cognizant, Quest Global and Indium type of posting that Google surfaces for fresher data analyst searches in the city — ask for Excel, SQL and Power BI or Tableau explicitly, and screen with a test. If you cannot pass the test, nothing on the CV rescues it; if you can, very little on the CV matters.
How does the AimNxt Data Analyst programme fit this roadmap?
AimNxt runs the four blocks in this article as a published 90-day Data Analyst programme in Hyderabad, classroom at KPHB 5th Phase, online or hybrid, with an AimNxt certificate of completion at the end. It covers Advanced Excel, Power BI, Oracle SQL and Python for Data Analysis in that order, with live projects and case studies.
Two honest notes about it. First, AimNxt is an independent training provider, not a certification body — Microsoft owns and administers PL-300, and what AimNxt issues is its own certificate of completion, which is a record of training rather than a vendor credential. Second, the AimNxt Data Analytics programme in Hyderabad carries the AimNxt Job Interview Guarantee program, and that means guaranteed interview opportunities through the hiring-partner network — not a guaranteed job, and not a guaranteed salary. Whether an offer follows depends on your skills and how the interview goes.
The genuine argument for a structured course over self-study is narrow and worth stating plainly: somebody corrects your SQL. The study-plan builder above adds a time penalty for self-study for exactly that reason — unreviewed queries are how people arrive at an interview believing they know joins. If you would rather test that claim than take it from a blog, the Free Live Demo Session is 60 minutes with the trainer and costs nothing.
Decide your starting block
Beginners start at Excel. If you already build pivot tables at work, start at SQL and save six weeks.
Protect the hours before you buy anything
Put the weekly hours in a calendar. A plan built on hours you do not have is the usual failure.
Start project one in week three
As soon as you can filter and pivot, pick a dataset from a domain you understand and write the business question down.
Over-invest in SQL
Joins, group-by, subqueries and window functions, practised until boring. This block decides most first rounds.
Publish before you apply
Queries, dashboard and a written finding on each project. Then apply, and expect six to eight weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
