Search this question from India and the first result Google gives you is not a university, a course provider or a government page. It is a Reddit thread from r/developersIndia with thirty-odd comments, titled "Roadmap to become a data scientist? And is it hard to get…". Below it sit the roadmaps: earn a B.Tech, get certified, build a portfolio, pursue a master's. Five steps, same order, on every page.
Then look at what Google puts in its People Also Ask box for the same query. Four questions: who earns more, a CA or a data scientist; is JEE compulsory for data science; does ISRO hire data scientists; will AI replace data scientists. Not one of the ranking roadmaps answers a single one of them.
That gap is the reason this guide exists. The five-step ladder is not wrong, it is just unverified — nobody publishing it has checked it against what Indian employers are currently advertising for. So we did. Every job figure below was read from naukri.com for Hyderabad and Secunderabad on 15 October 2026, and the two numbers that matter most are 60 and 935.
How do you become a data scientist in India?
You become a data scientist in India in two stages: build Python, SQL, statistics and machine learning over six to twelve months, then enter via an adjacent paid role and convert to the title in year two or three. Hyderabad carried 60 data scientist adverts open to zero years on 15 October 2026, and 935 at three years.
That is the whole roadmap in one paragraph, and the second stage is the part the five-step ladders leave out. They end at "apply for data scientist roles", which assumes the door exists. The measured door is 60 listings in a city advertising 935 of the same role to people with three years behind them, and most of those 60 are not data scientist jobs at all. The rest of this guide shows you the arithmetic and what to do about it.
Why does every roadmap for this question look the same?
Because almost every page ranking for it describes an education pathway rather than an entry route, and education pathways are identical everywhere. The Google India top ten read on 15 October 2026 included Coursera, Edumilestones, Indira University, Indeed India, an IndiaAI article last touched in November 2021, a LinkedIn post and a decade-old Quora thread.
Degree pathways are easy to publish and impossible to get wrong. "Do 12th with science, then a B.Tech or B.Sc, then certifications, then a master's" is true and safe and tells you nothing about whether anyone will hire you at the end of it. Scaler's guide, last updated 19 February 2026, runs about 3,000 words and devotes its education section to bachelor's, courses, bootcamps and master's degrees. The 365 DataScience guide, updated August 2024, still cites a 2019 figure of 97,000 analytics openings.
Meanwhile Google has quietly rearranged this SERP around real people. A Reddit thread holds position one. Add "2026" to the query and the page fills with Reddit and Medium posts asking whether the field is still worth entering. Google is signalling that the sanitised ladder has lost credibility with the people searching for it.
What is the real sequence from degree to data scientist?
The honest sequence has five stages: a quantitative degree or equivalent self-study, six to twelve months of Python, SQL, statistics and machine learning, three reviewed projects, a first paid job in an adjacent data role, then the data scientist title at roughly one to three years of countable experience. Stage four is where most Indian roadmaps go silent.
Look at the actual data scientist listings in Hyderabad at the three-year filter and the pattern is unmistakable. Kroll advertises "Data Scientist I" at one to three years. EY advertises Data Scientist at one to six. Salesforce at one to seven. S&P Global Market Intelligence lists "Data Scientist III" at one to six. The entry rung of the data scientist ladder itself starts at about one year of experience, not at zero.
So the question "how do I become a data scientist" is really two questions wearing one coat. How do I get the skills, which is answerable in months. And how do I get the first year of countable experience, which is answerable only by taking a job that is adjacent to the one you want. Both matter. Only the first one gets written about.
| Stage | What you are doing | Typical duration | What ends it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Foundation | Python, SQL to window-function depth, descriptive statistics | 2–4 months | You can pull, clean and describe a dataset without a tutorial open |
| 2. Modelling | Regression, classification, clustering, validation, one visualisation tool | 3–5 months | You can explain why a model is wrong, not just run it |
| 3. Proof | Three end-to-end projects somebody experienced reviews and returns | 1–2 months | A reviewer stops finding structural problems |
| 4. Entry | First paid role: data analyst, analytics associate, data engineer, BI | 2–6 months | An offer letter, usually without "scientist" in the title |
| 5. Conversion | Production data experience, internal moves, the title change | 12–30 months | "Data Scientist I" or equivalent on your own CV |
Durations reflect what we see across AimNxt batches at KPHB 5th Phase and the experience bands printed on live Hyderabad adverts read 15 October 2026. They are ranges, not promises; stage 3 overlaps stage 2, and stage 4 depends on the market in the month you apply. Nothing here is a guarantee of a hiring outcome.
How hard is the first data science job to get in India?
Hard, and it is measurable: Hyderabad showed 60 data scientist adverts open to zero years of experience on 15 October 2026 and 935 open at three years, a widening of roughly 15.6 times. The skills gap between those two groups is modest. The vacancy gap is more than fifteenfold, which tells you the constraint is countable experience, not ability.
The pay data runs the same shape. PayScale India's data scientist page, last updated 9 July 2026 from 1,267 salary profiles, reports an average of about Rs 5,95,255 for entry level under one year of experience and about Rs 10,05,147 for the early-career one-to-four-year band. That is roughly a 69 per cent step for twelve to eighteen months of being employed. These are market estimates, not guarantees — they depend on experience, employer and interview performance.
Put the two together and year one is the chokepoint of the entire career. Not the maths, not the master's, not the certification. Fifteen times the openings and nearly double the pay sit on the far side of a single year of employment, which is why the whole plan should be built around getting that year started rather than around getting the title on day one.
What are those 60 fresher adverts actually offering?
Mostly not data science jobs. Of the 60 Hyderabad data scientist adverts open to zero years on 15 October 2026, Naukri's filters show 8 are unpaid internships and 20 sit in the Rs 0–3 lakh band. Page one holds two data annotator posts and a data engineer advert restricted to IIT and NIT graduates.
It is worth reading the titles rather than the count. On that first page: Data Analyst at Digital Glyde, Associate Data Scientist at Trinet Group listed as an unpaid internship, Data Science Intern at ADQ Services, Data Analyst at Golden Management, Data Engineer Intern unpaid, "Data Engineers (Fresher) — strictly IIT/NIT graduates only" at Blumetra, Data Analyst Intern unpaid, Data Annotator and Senior Data Annotator at S&S Enterprise, Data & AI Intern unpaid, plus several data engineer and staff engineer roles.
Exactly one listing on that page carried a plain data scientist title open to a fresher, and it was an unpaid internship. This is not a reason to abandon the goal. It is a reason to stop treating "apply for data scientist roles" as step five of a plan, because for somebody with zero years in Hyderabad that step currently has about two real doors in it.
60 vs 935
Hyderabad data scientist adverts at the 0-year filter against the 3-year filter, read 15 October 2026. A 15.6x widening for one to three years of employment.
47 of 60
Fresher-open listings whose education filter is Any Postgraduate. Only 4 of the 60 name B.Tech or B.E. The postgrad gate is real at entry and nobody writes about it.
20 in the 0–3 L band
A third of the fresher-open adverts sit in the lowest salary band, and 8 of the 60 are unpaid internships carrying no stipend at all.
GenAI in the JD
Infosys, EY and Fractal Analytics all advertise Hyderabad data scientist roles in 2026 naming LLM, RAG and agentic AI skills directly in the requirement list.
What qualification do you need to become a data scientist in India?
A bachelor's degree in a quantitative subject is the stated minimum almost everywhere, but 47 of the 60 Hyderabad fresher-open data scientist adverts read on 15 October 2026 filter to Any Postgraduate, against only 4 that name B.Tech or B.E. A master's is not compulsory. At the zero-experience end it is, in practice, a strong tiebreaker.
That gate loosens as you gain experience, which is the useful part. At the three-year filter the same search returns 935 listings, of which 755 accept Any Graduate and 607 mention Any Postgraduate — the graduate pool becomes the larger one. In other words, the degree matters most at the exact moment you have nothing else to show, and matters steadily less once you have shipped work.
The practical reading: if you already hold a postgraduate degree in any quantitative field, use it, because at entry it clears a filter 47 of 60 adverts are applying. If you hold only a bachelor's, do not spend two years and a fee on an M.Tech to fix a problem that twelve months of employment also fixes. Spend six to twelve months on skills and projects, take the adjacent role, and revisit a master's later if a specific job you want demands one.
Is JEE compulsory to become a data scientist?
No. JEE is an entrance examination for admission to engineering colleges such as the IITs and NITs, and no data scientist job advertisement requires it. Not one of the 60 Hyderabad fresher-open data scientist listings read on 15 October 2026 mentions JEE. Employers screen on degree level, skills and projects, never on the entrance exam you sat years earlier.
The confusion is understandable. Google shows this exact question in its People Also Ask box for "how to become a data scientist in India", and the degree-pathway articles that rank do start at "take 12th with science", which makes the whole route look like an engineering admission problem. It is not. B.Sc, B.Com with statistics, BCA, economics, mathematics and physics graduates all work in Indian data teams.
One honest caveat, because it appeared in our own data: a Hyderabad fresher data engineer advert from Blumetra Solutions was explicitly restricted to IIT and NIT candidates. Those filters exist at a small number of employers. They are a minority, they are visible in the advert, and they are not a reason to conclude the field is closed to you.
What skills does a 2026 data scientist advert in India actually ask for?
Python, SQL and machine learning remain the base, but the 2026 Indian data scientist job description has absorbed generative AI: live Hyderabad listings now name LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation and agentic AI frameworks directly in their requirements. This is the single biggest gap between what the ranking roadmaps teach and what employers are currently advertising for.
The evidence is in the adverts, not in a trend report. Infosys advertises a role titled "Data Scientist | Python | GenAI | LLM | RAG". EY's Hyderabad data scientist listing tags agentic AI, LangGraph, retrieval-augmented generation, LLM, function calling, Semantic Kernel, LangChain and AI agents. Fractal Analytics runs "Data Scientist — Gen AI" at one to six years, with natural language processing as a primary skill. Tiger Analytics advertises an AI engineer role naming generative AI, TensorFlow and LLM.
Compare that with the roadmaps ranking for this query. Scaler's skills section, updated February 2026, lists programming, statistics, machine learning, big data and communication — all correct, none of it mentioning LLMs or RAG. The 365 DataScience guide was last touched in August 2024. If you build your study plan from those pages you will arrive at the interview with a skill set that was complete in 2023.
This is why we teach the generative AI layer as part of the data path rather than as a separate universe. The AimNxt Data Science curriculum ends with a published module block named LLMs and ChatGPT, covering introduction to LLMs plus prompt engineering and best practices with industry use cases, and learners who want to go deeper into agents and RAG move on to Generative AI and Agentic AI training at our Kukatpally campus. The point is not to chase the acronym. It is that the acronym is now printed in the job description you are applying to.
Will AI replace data scientists?
The evidence from live Indian adverts points the other way: generative AI is being written into the data scientist job description rather than replacing it. Hyderabad carried 935 data scientist listings at the three-year filter on 15 October 2026, and the Infosys, EY and Fractal Analytics versions ask candidates to build with LLMs and RAG.
What is genuinely changing is which parts of the job are scarce. Writing a first-pass script, producing a standard chart and drafting boilerplate analysis are all faster with an assistant, and that compresses the junior work that used to justify a headcount. Framing the question, deciding whether a result is trustworthy, noticing that the training data is stale and owning the recommendation in front of a business owner are all still human, and they are what the three-year listings pay for.
So the honest answer is neither "your job is safe" nor "the field is over". The tasks that look most like typing are being automated, and the tasks that look most like judgement are being priced higher. The practical response is to get through the typing stage faster and spend your project time on the judgement stage — which, conveniently, is also what the year-one chokepoint rewards.
How long will your own roadmap take?
Your timeline is set by three things: where you are starting from, how many hours a week you can genuinely study, and whether you will enter through an adjacent role. Set the three controls below and the planner builds a week-numbered plan across the five stages and totals the years end to end.
The planner divides a fixed study-hours budget per stage by your weekly hours, adjusts the budget for your starting point, and then adds the job-search and conversion windows from the five-stage table. It is a planning aid built on published advert data and our own batch experience, not a prediction and not a hiring promise.

What does a data science course cover, module by module?
A complete data science syllabus runs from programming through statistics and machine learning to deep learning and large language models, finishing with a reviewed capstone project. The AimNxt Data Science programme publishes twelve module blocks in that order, with a stated typical classroom duration of four to six months. The exact published list is below, unedited.
| # | AimNxt Data Science module | Sub-topics as published |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Python + SQL | Python tuples; loops; lambda functions; classes; SQL basics; stored procs |
| 2 | Stats | Basic stats; covariance analysis methods; eigen values and eigen vectors; EDA |
| 3 | Data Visualization | Data visualization principles; chart types and usages; Tableau |
| 4 | Supervised Learning | Introduction to ML; regression; KNNs; SVMs; naive Bayes; DT and others |
| 5 | unSupervised Learning | PCA; clustering; market basket analysis; cross validation; hyper parameter tuning |
| 6 | Catch up Session / Doubt Clearing | Consolidation block before the deep learning half of the programme |
| 7 | Deep Learning | Deep learning concepts; neural networks; types; predictive analytics using neural networks; CNN |
| 8 | Computer Vision | Concepts; OpenCV; transfer learning; Keras and TensorFlow |
| 9 | NLP | Vectorization; embeddings; encoders and decoders; RNNs; transformers |
| 10 | LLMs and ChatGPT | Introduction to LLMs; prompt engineering and best practices with industry use cases |
| 11 | Catch up Session / Doubt Clearing | Second consolidation block before the capstone |
| 12 | Capstone 3 Weeks | Three-week end-to-end project, the piece that becomes your portfolio |
Module names and sub-topics quoted verbatim from the AimNxt Technologies LLP Data Science course content. Published prerequisites: basic knowledge of mathematics, statistics and programming concepts, with Python familiarity recommended. Stated typical classroom duration four to six months. Delivery: classroom at KPHB 5th Phase Kukatpally, live online, or hybrid.
Two things in that list are worth pointing out, because they are the parts a generic syllabus usually skips. Module 10 is LLMs and ChatGPT, which is the block that maps onto the GenAI requirements now printed in Hyderabad data scientist adverts. And modules 6 and 11 are catch-up and doubt-clearing blocks, scheduled rather than improvised, which is the honest acknowledgement that people fall behind between supervised learning and deep learning.
What does the AimNxt Data Science programme include?
Twelve published module blocks from Python and SQL through to LLMs and a three-week capstone, typically four to six months in classroom mode, delivered at KPHB 5th Phase in Kukatpally, live online or hybrid. It includes the AimNxt Job Interview Guarantee program, which provides guaranteed interview opportunities through our hiring-partner network — not a guaranteed job, placement or salary.
We should be precise about that, because the phrase is used loosely across this market. The AimNxt Job Interview Guarantee program commits to interview opportunities through our network of 110-plus hiring partners while you are placement-ready. It does not and cannot guarantee that you will be hired or what you will be paid, because those depend on your skills, your projects and how you perform in the interview. Alongside it you get resume support, mock-interview practice and an AimNxt certificate of completion.
On certification, the same honesty applies. AimNxt is an independent training provider and does not administer vendor examinations — the certificate you receive from us is an AimNxt certificate of completion. If you have been reading the roadmap pages that recommend stacking vendor certificates, you can read the definitional groundwork first in our guide on what data science actually is, and if the analyst route turns out to be your realistic entry door, the AimNxt Data Science programme at our KPHB 5th Phase campus and our analytics track share the same Python and SQL foundation, so the first three months are not wasted either way.
What does a data scientist earn in India?
PayScale India's data scientist page, last updated 9 July 2026 from 1,267 salary profiles, reports an average of about Rs 10,17,652 a year, a median of about Rs 10,00,000 and a tenth-to-ninetieth-percentile range of roughly Rs 3,12,000 to Rs 20,00,000. These are market estimates, not guarantees — they depend on experience, employer and interview performance.
The experience split on the same page is the part worth planning around. Entry level, under one year of experience, averages about Rs 5,95,255 from 307 salaries. Early career, one to four years, averages about Rs 10,05,147 from 754 salaries. The year-one step is roughly 69 per cent, and it mirrors the vacancy step almost exactly: 60 Hyderabad adverts at zero years against 935 at three.
The spread also tells you something the averages hide. A tenth percentile of about Rs 3,12,000 and a ninetieth of about Rs 20,00,000 on the same job title means employer and skill mix matter more than the title does. The Hyderabad adverts read on 15 October 2026 bear this out at entry: 20 of the 60 fresher-open listings sat in the Rs 0–3 lakh band, while at the three-year filter 622 of 935 sat in the Rs 6–10 lakh band and 392 in Rs 10–15 lakh.
Who earns more, a chartered accountant or a data scientist?
Neither consistently, and the comparison is less useful than it looks. PayScale India reports an average of about Rs 10,17,652 for a data scientist as of 9 July 2026, within a Rs 3.12 lakh to Rs 20 lakh band. Chartered accountancy pay is similarly wide and depends heavily on practice versus industry, firm tier and years post-qualification.
Google surfaces this question in its People Also Ask box for the data scientist query, so clearly a lot of Indian students are weighing the two. The difference that actually matters is structural rather than numerical. Chartered accountancy is a licensed qualification with a fixed examination path and a defined professional ceiling; data science is an unlicensed skills market with no entrance gate, no mandatory examination and no ceiling, which cuts both ways.
Practically: if you want a defined route with a protected title, CA is the defined route. If you want a field where your portfolio outweighs your paperwork and you are prepared for a narrow first year, data is that field. Comparing the two averages, which sit closer together than most students expect, is not how you should decide between them.
How do you start in Hyderabad specifically?
Start with SQL and Python for eight to twelve weeks, add statistics and one visualisation tool, get three projects reviewed by somebody experienced, then apply across data analyst, BI and data engineer adverts rather than only data scientist ones. Hyderabad advertised 935 data scientist roles at the three-year filter on 15 October 2026, with Infosys alone posting 116 of them.
Hyderabad is a genuinely good city to do this in, and the advert data says why: Infosys 116, Accenture 26, Capgemini 9 and EY 8 in that three-year slice, with 778 of the 935 listings work-from-office and only 4 remote. The work is here and it is largely on site, which means living in or near the corridor is an advantage rather than an inconvenience. Our campus sits at KPHB 5th Phase in Kukatpally, opposite PVR Nexus Mall, which is a short ride from the Kukatpally and JNTU metro stops and reachable from Miyapur, Madhapur and Gachibowli for weekend or evening batches.
When you compare institutes here, ignore the rankings they award themselves and ask four questions in writing: total taught hours, who corrects your code and tells you it is wrong, how many projects are reviewed and returned, and exactly what the certificate is. Then sit a free demo at two places in the same week. If the analyst door is the one likely to open first for you, the step order is laid out in our guide on how to become a data analyst in India, and the role difference is unpacked in data analyst vs data scientist.
