“Beginners welcome” is on every VAPT course page in India. It is also the least reliable sentence on any of them.
On 28 September 2026 we opened every result on Google’s first page for “vapt course for beginners” from India and read the one line that actually matters — the prerequisite line. The free course is three to four hours long and carries an Intermediate Level label. One Udemy course is six hours and eighteen minutes and says no prior experience is required. A Hyderabad classroom programme is 120-plus hours and its own FAQ says it is “highly recommended to have basic hacking knowledge”. Two live courses in the middle quietly list networking and operating-system knowledge as requirements.
So the word “beginner” is covering a forty-fold difference in teaching time and a complete contradiction about what you need before you walk in. That is not a marketing quibble. It is the reason people pay for a course, sit through week two, and quietly stop attending.
This page does the thing none of those pages do: it tells you what you genuinely need first, in what order to learn it, and what thirty days of honest preparation looks like. Every figure below was read on the day of publication and is sourced.
Can a Complete Beginner Take a VAPT Course?
Yes, a complete beginner can join a VAPT course — but the courses ranking for that phrase disagree wildly about what beginner means. Reading every page-one result on 28 September 2026, published length ran from three hours to 120 hours, and the two shortest were the ones promising no prerequisites at all.
The pattern is worth sitting with, because it inverts what you would expect. The courses that ask for the least are the ones that teach the least. The course that asks for prior hacking knowledge is the one with 120 hours of instruction behind it. Length and honesty track together on this SERP, and neither of them tracks the word “beginner”.
A genuine beginner — someone who has never opened a terminal — can absolutely become a working penetration tester. What they cannot do is skip the four weeks of groundwork. Skipping it is what turns a four-month course into an expensive spectator sport.
The honest version: VAPT is not an entry-level subject with a beginner shortcut. It is a subject that sits on top of three other subjects — networking, Linux and web technology. A good beginner course teaches those three first. A course that opens with Metasploit in week one is selling you a demo, not a skill.
What Does “Beginner” Actually Mean on a VAPT Course Page?
On Google’s first page for this query, beginner covers everything from a free three-hour Alison course labelled Intermediate Level to a 120-hour Hyderabad classroom programme whose own FAQ recommends prior hacking knowledge. That is a forty-fold difference in teaching time, all indexed under the same word, read on 28 September 2026.
Here is the audit. Every row is the provider’s own published wording, copied from the page on the day we read it. Nobody else has put these side by side, which is precisely why the word keeps getting away with it.
| Provider | Mode | Published length | Stated prerequisite (their words) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alison | Self-paced, free | 3–4 hours | None stated — but the course itself is labelled “Intermediate Level” |
| Udemy (VAPT & OWASP) | Self-paced | 6 hrs 18 min, 94 lectures | “No prior experience is required—just a computer with internet access, curiosity, and a passion for cybersecurity!” |
| iGmGuru | Live | 35 hours | “Basic Knowledge of Networking, Understanding of Operating Systems, Basic Knowledge of Cybersecurity Concepts” |
| MindMajix | Live | 40 hours (20 theory + 20 hands-on) | “Experts recommend a basic knowledge of operating systems(Linux and Windows) and networking.” |
| Isha Training Solutions | Live | 50 hours, 127 lectures | No technical requirement — “Beginners who want to start a career in Cybersecurity or Ethical Hacking” |
| Hacker School (Hyderabad) | Live classroom | 120+ hours, 75% practical | “Basic computer knowledge” — and, in the FAQ, “it is highly recommended to have basic hacking knowledge” |
| EC-Council (career path, not a course) | Certification body | — | Entry tier: “1-2 years Basic Computer Knowledge”. Core tier, which holds C|EH: “More than 2 years Networking Knowledge” |
Two things fall out of that table. The first is that the free option is the one labelled Intermediate, which is exactly backwards from what a beginner assumes. The second is more useful: the certification body itself does not treat its flagship ethical hacking certificate as a beginner’s first step. EC-Council places C|EH in a tier that expects more than two years of networking knowledge. Plenty of Indian course pages sell CEH-prep as a starting point anyway.
One more detail worth knowing, because it changes what you are comparing. Hacker School’s ten-module beginner syllabus — Linux essentials, Linux administration, networking fundamentals, network security, vulnerability management, network penetration testing, advanced network pentesting, cryptography, Active Directory pentesting, compliance — contains no web application module at all. It is a network-side course. That is a legitimate choice, but it means two courses can both be called VAPT and share barely half their content. If you want the difference explained properly, our guide to what VAPT actually is breaks the assessment and testing halves apart.
What Do You Actually Need Before Your First VAPT Class?
Four things: working TCP/IP and subnetting knowledge, comfort on the Linux command line, a basic grasp of how Windows authentication works, and a laptop that can run two virtual machines at once. Nothing more. Every other skill a penetration tester uses is taught inside the course, in the module that needs it.
That list is short on purpose. Beginners routinely over-prepare on the wrong things — memorising tool flags, collecting certification PDFs — and under-prepare on the boring foundation that everything else stands on.
1. Networking you can reason about
IP addressing and subnetting, what a port is, the TCP three-way handshake, DNS, and what HTTP looks like on the wire. If you cannot explain why a SYN-ACK matters, Nmap output is just coloured text.
2. Linux at the command line
Navigating the filesystem, file permissions, users and groups, pipes and redirection, and enough Bash to loop over a list. You do not need to be a sysadmin. You need to stop being afraid of a black screen.
3. Windows and Active Directory basics
What a domain is, what a domain controller does, and roughly how Windows authenticates a user. Most enterprise penetration testing in India is Active Directory work, and this is the part self-taught beginners skip.
4. A machine that can host a lab
Two virtual machines running side by side — an attacker box and a target. This is the requirement most beginners discover on day one, which is late. Specifics in the next section.
Notice what is not on that list: no prior security job, no certification, no degree in computer science, no programming language. A B.Sc graduate who has spent four weeks on networking and Linux is better prepared than an IT professional who has spent four weeks watching exploitation videos. If networking is the gap, the structured route is the CCNA and CCNP networking course in Hyderabad, which covers addressing, routing and switching on real Cisco hardware rather than a simulator.
What Laptop Do You Need to Run a VAPT Lab?
Kali Linux itself needs only 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of disk for its default Xfce desktop, but the Kali documentation recommends at least 8 GB for resource-intensive work — and a VAPT lab runs Kali plus a target machine simultaneously. Plan for 16 GB and an SSD.
Those minimums come from Kali’s own installation documentation, and they describe Kali running alone. A real lab session is different: Kali in one window, a deliberately vulnerable target such as Metasploitable or DVWA in another, Burp Suite proxying between them, and a browser open on top. Burp alone is a Java application that will happily take 2 GB.
8 GB RAM
Workable. Kali plus one small target, one tool at a time. Expect to close things.
16 GB RAM
Comfortable. Kali, a Windows target and Burp Suite together without swapping.
SSD, 100 GB free
Virtual machine disks grow. Snapshots grow faster. A mechanical drive makes every boot painful.
No machine yet?
Browser-based lab platforms let you practise without local virtualisation, but you still need a lab you control eventually.
One practical warning. If your laptop is a corporate device or has virtualisation disabled in BIOS, sort that out before the course starts, not in week one. It is the single most common reason a beginner falls a week behind.
In What Order Should a Beginner Learn VAPT?
Networking first, then Linux, then Windows and Active Directory, then web technologies — and only then the attacking. That is the order the AimNxt VAPT and Ethical Hacking curriculum uses across its first four modules, and it is the order that stops a beginner running tools they cannot interpret.
The sequence is not arbitrary. Every offensive technique is a misuse of something that works normally, so you have to understand the normal behaviour first. Kerberoasting makes sense once you know how Kerberos issues service tickets. SQL injection makes sense once you know what the application was trying to do with your input. Reverse that order and you memorise commands instead of learning a method.
| Stage | What you learn | Why it has to come first |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Networking and lab setup | Without TCP/IP and subnetting, scan results are unreadable and you cannot build a lab to practise in |
| 2 | Linux | Every offensive tool ships on Linux. Privilege escalation is a Linux and Windows literacy problem before it is an exploit problem |
| 3 | Windows and Active Directory | Indian enterprise environments are AD-shaped. Skipping this is why many self-taught testers stall at web-only work |
| 4 | Web technologies and the OWASP Top 10 | HTTP, cookies, sessions and server-side logic are the vocabulary of every web finding you will ever report |
| 5 | Recon, scanning and vulnerability assessment | The assessment half of VAPT. This is also the work freshers are actually hired to do first |
| 6 | Exploitation, post-exploitation and reporting | The part everyone wants to start with. It only works once the five stages above are in place |
If you want to see which tools attach to which stage before you commit, our VAPT tools guide ranks the toolchain by what Hyderabad job listings actually name — and the answer is not the one the tutorials assume.

Is There a Free VAPT Course Available?
Yes, several — but the best-known free one, Alison’s Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing course, runs three to four hours and is labelled Intermediate Level. Free material teaches you concepts and tool syntax. What it cannot give you is someone checking your method, reviewing your written report, or arranging an interview.
Free is genuinely useful, and any honest trainer will tell you to use it. Here is what is worth your time and what each one actually does for you.
| Free resource | What it gives a beginner | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| Alison VAPT course | A 3–4 hour conceptual overview: the two halves of VAPT, the four phases, the tool landscape | Labelled Intermediate Level, and it is a lecture, not a lab |
| TryHackMe free rooms | Guided, browser-based practice with immediate feedback — the fastest way to get comfortable | Guided means the thinking is partly done for you |
| DVWA, bWAPP, Metasploitable | Deliberately vulnerable targets you host yourself. This is your real lab | No curriculum and no order — you have to supply both |
| OWASP project documentation | The authoritative reference for web vulnerability classes and testing method | Written for practitioners, not first-timers |
| Nessus Essentials | A genuine commercial scanner, free for a small number of IP addresses | Scanning is a fraction of the job; validating findings is the skill |
The honest framing is this. Free material is excellent at teaching you what a technique is. It is poor at teaching you whether you did it well, because nobody is reading your work. That gap is the entire value proposition of a paid course, and it is worth being clear-eyed about, including when the course is ours.
How Do You Get a VAPT Certificate?
There is no exam called VAPT, so you certify through a vendor: EC-Council’s CEH, OffSec’s OSCP, INE’s eJPT or TCM Security’s PNPT. A training institute, AimNxt included, issues its own certificate of completion — the vendor exam is separate, is paid for separately, and is what employers recognise.
Beginners lose money on this distinction regularly. An institute page saying “VAPT certification” may mean a completion certificate it prints itself, or preparation for a vendor exam you buy on top. Both are legitimate. Confusing them is not, and the exam is usually the larger number of the two. We compared the four realistic exam routes, and what each one is actually good for, in our guide to the best VAPT certifications for 2026.
Say it plainly
EC-Council, OffSec, INE, TCM Security and CompTIA are the certification bodies. AimNxt is an independent training provider that prepares you for their exams and issues its own AimNxt certificate of completion. No training institute in Hyderabad can issue a CEH or an OSCP, and any page implying otherwise is worth walking away from.
For a beginner, the sensible order is: learn first, certify second. A certificate earned before you can build and break a lab is a line on a CV that an interviewer will dismantle in four minutes.
Which Course Is Best for a Beginner Who Wants to Hack?
For a genuine beginner, the best first course is the one that teaches networking, Linux and web fundamentals before it teaches exploitation — not the one with the most impressive tool list. EC-Council’s own VAPT career path places its Certified Ethical Hacker tier above a level expecting more than two years of networking knowledge.
That is the cleanest way to judge a syllabus without knowing the subject yet: look at what module one is. If module one is reconnaissance or Metasploit, the course assumes you arrived with the foundation. If module one is networking and lab setup, the course is built for where you actually are.
Four questions worth asking any provider before you pay, in a demo or over WhatsApp:
What is module one, exactly?
Ask for the module list in order, not a topic cloud. The order tells you who the course was designed for.
How many live instructor hours?
“Four months” and “40 hours” can describe the same course. Hours are comparable; months are not.
Do I build the lab, or watch one?
Building your own attacker and target machines is half the learning. A recorded demo is not a lab.
Will anyone read my report?
Reporting is the only artefact a client ever sees. Ask whether a trainer marks yours, or whether it is left as an exercise.
If you want that comparison applied across the city rather than to one provider, our guide to the best ethical hacking and VAPT training institutes in Hyderabad ships a twelve-point evaluation method instead of a ranking, and scores AimNxt against it in public.
Can You Learn Cyber Security in 3 Months?
In three months you can become genuinely employable at entry level in one narrow area — not across cyber security as a field. The AimNxt VAPT and Ethical Hacking programme runs four months across fifteen modules, and the fourth month is largely cloud, mobile, reporting and the capstone engagement.
Cyber security is not one job. Defensive monitoring, offensive testing, governance and compliance, cloud security, forensics — these are separate careers with separate day-to-day work. Three focused months on one of them is a realistic goal. Three months across all of them produces someone who recognises vocabulary and cannot do anything.
For VAPT specifically, a sensible three-month picture looks like this: month one on networking, Linux and lab setup; month two on web technologies, recon and vulnerability assessment; month three on exploitation, Active Directory and writing your findings up properly. That is a competent junior who can do assessment work. It is not an OSCP holder, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. If defensive work appeals more, the comparison sits in our SOC analyst versus cyber security analyst breakdown.
What Do Beginners Get Wrong in the First Month?
The single most common mistake is running a scanner before understanding the protocol underneath it — Nmap output is meaningless if you cannot read a TCP three-way handshake. The second is skipping note-taking, which is why the written report, a full module in the AimNxt curriculum, catches people out later.
A few more we see every batch, listed plainly because nobody enjoys being told this after they have paid:
- Collecting tools instead of method. Knowing forty tools and no methodology makes you slower than someone who knows six and a process.
- Watching instead of typing. Video hours are not lab hours. If you did not break it yourself, you did not learn it.
- Chasing bug bounties in week three. Public programmes are competitive, unstructured, and demoralising before you have a foundation. Build the lab first.
- Treating reporting as admin. The finding is worth nothing until someone can act on it. This is the skill that separates a junior who gets renewed from one who does not.
- Working alone through the hard weeks. Weeks three and four are where self-taught beginners quit. A batch, a trainer and a fixed schedule exist mostly to get you past exactly that point.

What Does the AimNxt VAPT & Ethical Hacking Programme Cover?
The AimNxt VAPT and Ethical Hacking programme runs four months across fifteen sequenced modules, opening with Networking Fundamentals & Lab Setup and closing with Report Writing & Professional Skills, then a Capstone Project that is a full penetration testing engagement. The first four modules exist precisely so a beginner is not thrown at exploitation.
We publish the module list in full because order is the thing a beginner should be comparing, and because the table above showed how differently two “VAPT courses” can be built. Every name below is copied exactly from the programme curriculum.

Note what modules one to four are. A beginner joining the four-month VAPT & Ethical Hacking programme in Hyderabad spends the opening stretch on networking, Linux, Windows and web technology — the same four prerequisites listed near the top of this page. You are not expected to arrive with them. You are expected to arrive willing to do them properly before anyone opens Metasploit.
What the Job Interview Guarantee program is, exactly
The AimNxt Job Interview Guarantee program guarantees interview opportunities through the hiring-partner network — not a job offer, not a placement, and not a salary. Whether you convert an interview depends on your skills, your reports and your performance on the day. For a beginner that distinction matters more than it looks: the interviews are the door, and what you built in four months is what gets you through it.
What Should Your First 30 Days Look Like?
Week one networking, week two Linux, week three Windows and Active Directory basics, week four a built lab with Kali and one deliberately vulnerable target. Thirty days at two focused hours a day is roughly sixty hours — enough to arrive at a VAPT course able to follow it from day one.
You can do all of this free, before you pay anyone anything. That is deliberate advice against our own short-term interest, and it is still the right advice: students who arrive prepared get far more out of a four-month programme than students who spend month one catching up.
| Week | Focus | You are done when… |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Networking: IP, subnetting, ports, TCP/UDP, DNS, HTTP | You can subnet on paper and explain what happens when you type a URL and press Enter |
| 2 | Linux: navigation, permissions, users, pipes, basic Bash | You can find every file owned by a user, change its permissions, and script it for ten files |
| 3 | Windows and AD: domains, domain controllers, authentication, PowerShell | You can describe what a domain controller stores and run a PowerShell command without copying it |
| 4 | Build the lab: VirtualBox, Kali, one vulnerable target, snapshots | Kali and a target are on the same virtual network, you can ping between them, and you can restore a snapshot |
At the end of those thirty days, walk into a demo session and ask the trainer to pitch you week five. If the answer lands, you are ready. If it does not, you have lost nothing but four weeks of skills you were going to need regardless.
